In February, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad hosted his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to reaffirm the strength of their 30-year alliance, vowing to deepen ties and dismissing US efforts to drive a wedge between Damascus and Tehran. The meeting may complicate the rapprochement between Assad and Washington that was signalled by the recent appointment of a new US ambassador to Syria five years after the last envoy was withdrawn.
