The European Parliament (EP) has postponed a decision to grant Tunisia 'advanced partner status' with the EU owing to concerns about the country's human rights record and press freedom. An upgrade would pave the way for greater political and economic cooperation and more preferential treatment than it already enjoys under its current Partnership Agreement. Members of the EP are divided over the issue, but eventual approval seems likely. We maintain that economic and security concerns will remain highest on the list of government priorities for the foreseeable future.
