February 2010 | Risk SummaryThe government recalled its ambassador from Mauritania in protest at a court ruling that resulted in the release of two Algerian Islamist militants, members of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), calling it a dangerous development for the region's security. Frequent attacks by the group on public buildings, police stations, and military installations in Algeria have undermined the government and its claims to have neutralized the Islamist movement. Although the level of public support for the group appears limited, we caution that it could grow if job opportunities and economic prospects remain limited, and if the public grows increasingly frustrated
