Rights Groups Call For Activists' Release
March 2010 | Ratings UpdateUS based rights group Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called for the release of political activist in Cabinda who were arrested for alleged crimes against state security. According to HRW, the suspects have been in custody for almost two months, with little sign of the government conducting a proper criminal investigation. That the government is using the attack on the Togolese football team as a pretext to crack down on critics of the regime is not surprising; Angola has long been intolerant of dissent, and perhaps even more so since the embarrassment caused by the Togo incident.
