With the completion of its Founding Congress, the General Federation of Oman Trade Unions (GFOTU) was established in February, following nearly two years of delays. Fifty Omani trade unions elected some 100 delegates to the Congress, and named Saoud Ali Abdullah Al Jabri as the GFOTU president. The move represents a significant development for the country's budding trade union movement, which was banned under Oman's labour law prior to a royal decree issued in 2006 that legalised the formation of trade unions, collective bargaining, and strike action.
