A letter of protest issued by 36 NGOs in March accused the government of seeking to curtail the activities of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including preventing them from monitoring elections ahead of upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections. According to the statement, the legislation would penalize any NGO or advocacy group working without a government permit. The government has yet to comment on the draft bill that will be brought before parliament in the coming months.
