April 2010 | Risk SummaryIn mid-April, media reports suggested that Syria had transferred Scud missiles, capable of hitting any target in Israel, to Hizbullah in Lebanon. The US has since cast down on the claim, and though Defense Secretary Robert Gates stated in late April that Syria and Iran were providing Hizbullah with weapons of 'ever increasing capability', he did not say that these weapons included Scuds. Gates also stated that Hizbullah was now more heavily-armed than most states. These weapon transfers threaten to undermine Washington's moves towards rapprochement with Damascus.
