May 2010 | Risk SummaryIn April 2010, President Jacob Zuma was publicly tested for HIV, in a bid to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS. The test result was negative. Zuma is seemingly keen to silence critics who say that the president is doing little to promote awareness of the disease, having in the past admitted to having unprotected sex with an HIV-positive woman. It is thought that at least 5.7mn of South Africa's 50mn population are infected with HIV/AIDS, and 1,000 people die every day due to the disease.
