The UN Security Council has unanimously passed resolution 1920 to extend for another year the mandate of the 224-strong peacekeeping mission in the Western Sahara (MINURSO). Moroccan officials welcomed the resolution as confirming that negotiations should focus on autonomy for the region and not outright independence. The Polisario Front (PF), which seeks Western Sahara's independence, has condemned the resolution for not providing a mechanism to monitor human rights violations in the territory.
