The decision by South Africa's ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), to discipline trade union boss Zwelinzima Vavi for criticising President Zuma for a weak line on corruption drives a wedge between the ANC and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), long-time political allies. COSATU stated it would reassess its alliance with ANC if it is not involved more in government decisions. Were COSATU to sever its alliance with ANC, South Africa's ruling party would find it more difficult to pass bills through parliament.
