Market Relocation Risks Causing Unrest
June 2010 | Ratings UpdateThe recent decision by Angola's government to demolish and relocate the Roque Santeiro market in downtown Luanda, a crucial source of affordable goods for poor Angolans inhabiting packed urban slums, will make it more difficult for many of the city's poor to make a living. The decision is thought to be driven by government plans to sell the strip of land overlooking the port of Luanda to real estate investors. We believe such a deal could provoke unrest as approximately 200,000 vendors will be affected. The decision seems to contradict recent promises by the government to do more for ordinary Angolans.
