Chinese foreign direct investment is reaching a number of sectors in Zambia. While the bulk (89%) of FDI is still channelled into the mining sector, the dollar value and job creation of FDI pledges in the other three sectors are substantial: about US$625mn combined, directly responsible for the creation of approximately 13,000 jobs. We believe that this diversification of investment will subdue anti-China sentiment in Zambia and will thus allow the government to pursue a deeper political partnership with China without political backlash.
