Quantity Over Quality In Education

Between 2004 and 2009, the number of pupils enrolled in all levels of schooling increased by 45%, reaching 6.7 million in 2009, according to the country's education minister, Zeferino Martins. Despite the positive direction of the absolute numbers of pupils, Martins bemoaned the fact that the quality of education had not improved at the same time. This borne out by the tenth grade pass rate, which was at 58.1% in 2009, below the 61.4% mark achieved in 2007.
