The party of President Ali Bongo, the Parti Démocratique Gabonais (PDG), held onto a majority of its seats in a by-election in June. Two of the five seats were lost to the National Union, the official opposition. The opposition claims that the victories come as a result of unimaginable, flagrant fraud, but it has not been able to mobilise mass popular support against the President despite these convictions. The PDG has a strong grip on power, which we believe will facilitate a stable political climate for the foreseeable future.
