Namdeb Labour Dispute Resolved
July 2010 | Ratings UpdateThe Mineworkers' Union of Namibia (MUN) accepted state-owned miner Namdeb 's offer of a 10% pay rise on July 16 2010, averting the possibility of large scale industrial action. Although workers received a 12% bonus on last year's wages, the union had been angling for a 13% rise in 2010, in addition to increased housing and remote allowances. Namibia's labour market is already among the most rigid in Sub Saharan Africa, with restrictive regulations and inadequate workforce education frequently cited as the most problematic factors for doing business.
