Religious Tensions Flare in Sokoto
July 2010 | Ratings UpdateRival groups of Muslims clashed in the northern city of Sokoto (Kano State) in mid-July, resulting in three deaths and heavy police deployment in the affected areas. Although Sokoto most religious violence in Nigeria is the result of tensions between Christians and Muslims, Sokoto has become a flashpoint for Sunni-Shia tensions. The most recent incident appears to have been set off by a group of Sunni who attacked a demonstration of Shiites demanding the release of 120 Shia imprisoned over the death of a Sunni cleric.
