Referendum Postponed

July 2010 | Risk Summary

The head of Madagascar's election commission has announced that the referendum on the new constitution has been postponed indefinitely because the charter has not yet been completed. The charter has not been produced as a national conference to draft the document has not taken place. Election commission chief Hery Rakotomalala commented to Reuters reporters that 'we can no longer organise the referendum on August 12…officially, we can say that it has been indefinitely postponed'. This augurs for a continued political stalemate in Madagascar, since the referendum will be a precursor to holding democratic elections.
