Recent events that increased tensions between Morocco and Spain led to a meeting of the heads of state on September 21. In August, alleged police violence against Moroccans in the Spanish enclave of Melilla led to demonstrations that prevented food trucks from entering the island, and a visit by a prominent Spanish politician to the disputed enclave angered Morocco. In Western Sahara, 14 Spanish pro-independence activists were arrested. However, as the economic relationship between the countries is deep, we see little risk that these events will significantly harm their economic ties.
