Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that he would not attend a climate change conference in Athens on October 22 if Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was attending. Ever since the Turkish flotilla incident in May when Israeli soldiers killed Turkish nationals, relations between Israel and Turkey have gone cold. To fill the void left by Turkey, Israel is improving economic and political relations with Greece by attempting to increase tourism and engaging in joint military exercises. However, Turkey's position as a key ally and its cooperation in intelligence sharing cannot easily be replaced.
