President Goodluck Jonathan's election campaign continues to be threatened by tensions with the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) after the rebel group claimed responsibility for two car bombs detonated in Abuja. While the government has arrested several suspects in connection with the attacks, including the brother of former MEND leader Henry Okah, it is still not known which elements of the group are responsible for the attack, nor is it clear what their underlying motives are. At the centre of the issue are questions over who speaks for MEND's unofficial spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, who exists only as an email personality.
