Government To Make Limited Progress
November 2010 | Political Risk AnalysisAlthough Iraq's major political blocs came to a power-sharing agreement on November 10 that will allow them to form a new government, we maintain our view that significant political challenges are still ahead. In an attempt to satisfy all the major parties, the Shi'a-dominated National Alliance, Kurdish alliance, and Sunni-backed Iraqiya groups agreed to give the prime minister position to incumbent Nouri al-Maliki (a Shi'a), the presidency to Jalal Talabani (a Kurd), and the parliamentary speaker post to Osama al-Nujaifi (a Sunni Arab).
