The passage of two Iranian warships through the Suez Canal on February 22 has caused alarm in Israel, and top Israeli leaders have called the action 'a provocation'. The Suez Canal Authority announced last week that ships of any nationality could pass through as long as the country is not in a state of war with Egypt, and Iran used the opportunity to send the ships to Syria in what it describes as a 'routine visit'. Israel responded by putting its navy on alert.
