May 2009 | Ratings UpdateAfter her defeat in the presidential polls, the leader of the Workers' Party Louisa Hanoune has called for the Algerian parliament to be disbanded. Hanoune claims that in light of Abdelaziz Bouteflika's landslide victory, the legislature is no longer providing the necessary checks and balances to government power. She added that parliamentarians are failing to adequately serve the electorate. However, such a move is highly unlikely, given the dominance of Bouteflika supporters in parliament, and the general political apathy of Algerian voters. The next parliamentary elections are currently scheduled to take place in 2012.
