Opposition Crumbling
June 2009 | Ratings UpdatePresident Armando Guebuza and his FRELIMO party are looking increasingly certain bets for the general election due later this year. The opposition RENAMO party is tearing itself apart over internal divisions and could splinter for good. Its problem is that its leadership is from the old guard that fought (and lost) the civil war of the 1980s and 1990s, while the younger cadres prefer a much more pragmatic approach to politics. Also, while GDP growth has yet to trickle down to many of the poorest, the economic environment is pretty stable, and Mozambique is regarded as a responsibly run country. As such, RENAMO has limited ammunition to attack Guebuza. Corruption remains an issue, but neither side can claim to be blameless.
