New Rules To Benefit Domestic Labourers

According to an announcement by the Namibian Tender Board, the state organ responsible for awarding government contracts, companies employing foreign unskilled or semi-skilled labourers will no longer be eligible for tenders. Given that the local unemployment rate is thought to be around 50%, the new regulation are designed to curb the practice of importing cheap foreign labourers at the expense of Namibians. An unnamed government official said that Chinese and North Korean construction firms were being specifically targeted since much of the labour they use is imported. Unsurprisingly, the announcement was welcomed by the National Union of Namibian workers, saying that it could help alleviate poverty.
