There has been a further deterioration in the situation in Gaza with an estimated 60 Palestinian fatalities as a result of Israeli Defence Force operations there in the first week of October. The government's aim of eliminating the Hamas leadership and high-profile members will continue for the foreseeable future and this will do little to improve the overall security situation or enhance Israeli-Palestinian relations. Meanwhile internal disagreement within the government over Gaza disengagement has continued, with right-wing elements refusing to consent to settlement dismantlement.
