Namibia gained independence from SA 'administration' in 1990, but the economic ties between the two countries remain a dominant feature, especially as the local dollar is fixed-at-par to the rand. The influence of SA financial institutions is also noteworthy: a highly developed savings management industry is in place, with assets of close to 100% of GDP. However, about two-thirds of the annual rise in savings is invested in SA, given the paucity of local opportunities, which makes it difficult to fund economic diversification. Since statehood, politics have been stable and economic performance generally good, notwithstanding a narrow productive base. Mineral
