A new government committee has been established to co-ordinate a campaign against child trafficking, a region-wide problem which is particularly acute in Benin. As many children are sold into labour in Nigerian mines and quarries, co-operation between both countries is the key to curbing the trade. The brief closure of the border by Nigeria last year could threaten the potential for co-operation, but a subsequent agreement to establish joint border controls is a positive signal.
