Our 2005 growth estimate is slightly more cautious than the government's, at 5.4%, as is our 2006 forecast at 5.1%. We expect to see 4.5% growth in 2007.

Government View: Presenting the 2006 budget to parliament, Finance Minister Manasseh Nshuti estimated that the economy grew by 6% in 2005, and announced government expectations of more than 6% growth this year. He projected 4% inflation in 2006. The government's 'Vision 2020' plan targets an ambitious per capita GDP increase from around US$250 to US$900 by the end of the next decade
