President Idriss Déby will be re-elected for the third time in Chad's presidential polls held on May 3, which will significantly increase the risk of the country descending into civil war. In power since 1990, Déby's government held a referendum last year to amend the constitution in order to allow him to stand for a third term. Rebel forces denounced the referendum and boycotted the presidential elections, leaving Déby virtually unchallenged with only four other (government friendly) candidates.
