Following fears of another outbreak of conflict in northern Mali, a peace deal between the Tuareg rebels and the Malian government has been brokered by Algeria. In May, Tuareg rebels had attacked an army camp in the Saharan town of Kidal, leading to concerns that secessionist violence would break out again as in the 1960s and 1990s. The text of the deal has not yet been released, although Foreign Minister Mohammed Bedjaoui has announced that 'a strong point of the accord was the respect for the territorial integrity of Mali'.
