Driven by government spending underpinned by high hydrocarbon revenues, we expect the Algerian economy to grow by 5.5% in 2006 and relatively robustly over the rest of the forecast period. However the government's decision to reverse the 2005 liberalisation of the hydrocarbons sector and an increasing trend towards populist politics, now poses a major risk to both economic reforms and long term growth.
