The announcement of a 21,500 boost to US troop levels in Iraq is not likely sufficient to halt sectarian strife in Baghdad, let alone countrywide. Moreover, the escalation has been met with strong unease amongst the US and Iraqi public, a majority of Democratic lawmakers and a number of Republicans. Ultimately, the country is heading toward a de facto break-up.
