Ghana signed an interim goods-only trade deal with the European Union on December 13, ahead of the end-2007 expiry of preferential trade deals between the EU and former colonies. The country's Trade and Industries Minister Joe Badoe-Ansah said of the deal that 'this stepping stone agreement helps to avoid serious trade disruption between Ghana and the European Union'. It bodes well for foreign relations with the EU. Furthermore, regional relations appear unharmed: Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission President Mohamed Ibn Chambas said that 'we definitely do not object to these individual negotiations with the EU'.
