The publisher and editor of a Swahili language weekly known for its investigative journalism were attacked with machetes and acid, the culmination of a series of threats related to damaging stories published by the paper. We rate Tanzania a 3 out of 4 for media freedom, indicating some limits to freedom of expression - mostly restricted to the island of Zanzibar. The attack appears to be relatively isolated, with no other major incidents against journalists since August 2006. We are leaving our political risk ratings
