We have slightly ticked down our short-term political risk rating for Tanzania on the back of rising inflation, which poses risk to social stability. The rise in inflation has mostly been driven by rising fuel and food prices. Food prices are particularly important, as they account for over half the CPI basket in Tanzania, and have risen the most. Furthermore, higher food prices are more likely to foster social unrest than for other consumer goods, as so much of the populace spends the majority of its income on food.
