A recent report by campaign group Human Rights Watch has severely criticised the treatment of women in Saudi society. In particular, the report criticised the system of male guardianship, which requires Saudi women to obtain permission from a husband or male relative for everyday activities such as work, travel, education and healthcare. The group claims that the system of gender separation in the Kingdom prevents many women from entering the workforce, as businesses are unable or unwilling to provide separate working areas. Despite widespread criticism of the human rights situation by campaign groups and foreign governments, we do not expect
