The annual Jewish pilgrimage to the Ghriba Synagogue on the Tunisian island of Djerba passed without incident at the end of May, although the event took place under tight security. The Tunisian government is keen to enhance Tunisia's image as a haven of peace and tolerance in order to maintain growth in its all-important tourism industry. However, organisers of the pilgrimage noted that the number of German Jews taking part had still not returned to levels seen before the April 2002 terrorist attack on the Ghriba synagogue, which left 21 dead, 14 of them German tourists.
