Donor nations pledged a preliminary US$4.8bn in aid to Sudan in early May to boost the fragile 2005 north-south peace agreement. Sudan had earlier said that it needed US$6.1bn up to 2011, in addition to US$2bn in humanitarian aid. The funds will be divided between humanitarian efforts and longer-term development aid. A US diplomat revealed that Washington plans to spend an additional US$2bn on peacekeeping in Sudan over 2008-2009.
