Official statistics are non-existent but local economists 'guesstimate' that inflation is now something like 4,000,000 % y-o-y. We have refrained from offering forecasts in the current climate, but we see two different paths for the country to follow, going forward. Should Robert Mugabe or ZANU-PF retain power, we believe the current spiralling economic crisis will only worsen. On the other hand, if international and domestic pressure forces Mugabe to accept either an MDC government or MDC coalition, we see the potential for rapid economic recovery, with inflation being brought down to double digits by end-09 and the currency redenominated.
