According to the latest Worldwide Press Freedom Index compiled by the NGO Reporters Without Borders Botswana's journalists operate in a 'satisfactory' regulatory context, with the country ranking as the 75th most press-free country out of 169 listed. However, the contents of a new Media Practitioners Bill are being strongly opposed by the industry with protests being led by the Media Institute of Southern Africa. Objections centre on a new requirement obliging all reporters to be registered and accredited by a proposed Botswana Press Council, over which the relevant cabinet minister will have the power to appoint and dismiss key members.
