With the US looking to impose even tougher economic sanctions on Iran, and given Abu Dhabi's poor relations with Tehran, Dubai's position as a major trading partner of Iran could come under greater scrutiny. Indeed, Dubai could face growing internal and external pressure to limit its dealings with Iran. According to the IMF, Iranian imports from the UAE - mainly as re-exports from Dubai - totalled US$6.8bn in 2008, 9.8% of the Islamic Republic's total import bill (only China accounted for a greater share).
